The best time to visit Kashmir, month by month

28 August 20267 min read

Kashmir is one of the few Indian destinations where the month changes the trip entirely — not just the weather but which roads exist. Gulmarg in January and Gulmarg in June are two different holidays. Here is what each part of the year is actually like.

Month by month

MonthWhat it is likeWorth it for
MarchCold, thinning snow, almond blossom in Srinagar. Quiet.Low prices, no crowds
AprilTulip garden opens. Green valley, cool nights. Busy. The tulips, and only the tulips
May–JuneThe postcard version. Everything open, Sonamarg clear.First-timers, families, honeymoons
JulyWarm, humid, monsoon building. Crowded with school holidays.Escaping the plains
AugustWettest. Landslides close roads. Least reliable month.Little. Go another time
September–OctoberClear light, chinars turning, saffron harvest in Pampore.Photographers, and the best light of the year
NovemberCold, bare, very quiet. Some hotels shut.Solitude and low prices
December–FebruarySnow. Gulmarg gondola, frozen mornings, Dal partly iced.Snow, if you accept the risk

If you only want the tulips

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opens for about two to three weeks, usually in the first half of April. The exact dates are announced days in advance, because they depend on the bloom, not on a calendar.

If you want snow

Gulmarg between late December and February is the real thing — one of the highest gondolas in the world, and enough snow to ski on rather than photograph. What you are accepting in exchange:

None of that is a reason not to go. It is a reason not to book a tight connection on the way home.

What a Kashmir trip costs

For a group departure with the stay, transfers, sightseeing and a trip captain included, the honest range is ₹15,000 to ₹28,000 per person depending on how many nights and how far east you go. Ours:

Kashmir Tour4 Days 3 Nights₹15,500Kashmir Honeymoon5 Days 4 Nights₹21,500Kashmir Full Circuit7 Days 6 Nights₹27,500

The four-day trip covers Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. The seven-day circuit adds Sonamarg and Doodhpathri, which is the version worth doing if you have never been and are not coming back soon.

Three things that are true all year

Questions people actually ask

What is the best month to visit Kashmir?
May and June for a first visit: everything is open, the meadows are green and Sonamarg is accessible. April if you want the tulip garden. December to February for snow in Gulmarg, accepting that flights and roads can close.
When do the tulips bloom in Srinagar?
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden usually opens in the first half of April for about two to three weeks. Exact dates are announced only days in advance because they depend on the bloom rather than a fixed calendar.
Is Kashmir safe for tourists?
Tourist areas — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — are routinely visited and the tourism infrastructure is well established. Travel with an operator who is watching conditions, keep some slack in your return flight, and follow local advice on the day.
How much does a Kashmir trip cost?
A group departure with stay, transfers, sightseeing and a trip captain runs about ₹15,000 to ₹28,000 per person. Our four-day Kashmir tour is ₹15,500 and the seven-day full circuit is ₹27,500, both from Srinagar.
Is Sonamarg open in winter?
No. The Srinagar to Sonamarg road closes with snow, usually from around December to March. A winter itinerary that still lists Sonamarg is one to question before you book.
