If you want to find out whether you like Himalayan trekking without committing to a week, this is the one. It is short, the path is made, and the view at the top is out of proportion to the effort it takes to get there.
What the walk is actually like
| Leg | Distance | Gain | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chopta to Tungnath | about 3.5 km | roughly 2,680 m → 3,680 m | 2–3 hours |
| Tungnath to Chandrashila | about 1.5 km | 3,680 m → about 4,000 m | 45–60 minutes |
| Back down | about 5 km | — | 2–3 hours |
The path to Tungnath is paved in stone and used by pilgrims of every age. The last stretch to Chandrashila is rougher and steeper and is where most people notice the altitude — not because it is hard, but because it is 4,000 m.
Who it suits
- Anyone who can walk uphill for three hours without stopping every ten minutes.
- First-time trekkers. This is genuinely a beginner route.
- Families with older children, on the Tungnath section at least.
Go up in the dark
The single best decision on this trek is starting for the summit before sunrise. From Chandrashila at dawn you see Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar Dome and Chaukhamba across the horizon. By ten in the morning cloud has usually come up the valley and the wall is gone.
When to go
| Season | What you get |
|---|---|
| March–June | Rhododendrons in bloom through the forest, clear mornings, snow patches early on |
| July–August | Monsoon. Green, leeches, and the view mostly inside a cloud |
| September–November | The clearest skies of the year. Cold at the top. The best window |
| December–February | Snow trek. Beautiful, harder, and the temple is closed |
Tungnath temple itself shuts for winter — usually early November — and the deity moves down to Mukku. The walk stays open; the temple does not.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip. Stone steps are slick in dew and worse in rain.
- A warm layer and a windproof one. It is another world at 4,000 m at 6am.
- A head torch, if you are doing the dawn summit. This is not optional.
- Water, and more than you think. There is nothing to buy above Chopta.
