Almost every Meghalaya itinerary looks the same on paper — Shillong, Cherrapunji, Dawki, Mawlynnong. The difference between a three-night trip and a five-night one is not more places. It is whether you get to Nongriat.
What three nights gets you
- Shillong, and the drive in from Guwahati past Umiam Lake.
- Cherrapunji: Nohkalikai falls, Seven Sisters, the Mawsmai caves.
- Dawki, and the boat on the Umngot where the water is clear enough to see the riverbed.
- Mawlynnong on the way through.
That is a complete, honest short break. What it does not include is the walk down to the double-decker living root bridge, because there is no version of that which fits into a spare afternoon.
What the extra two nights buy
The double-decker root bridge at Nongriat
Roughly 3,000 steps down into the gorge and 3,000 back up. Four to six hours return for most people, longer in the wet, and the steps are slick. At the bottom is a bridge grown rather than built, from the aerial roots of a rubber fig trained across a stream over decades.
Time in the east
Five nights also gives you Krangsuri or Laitlum without driving through them at speed, and one unhurried day, which in a state this wet is insurance rather than luxury.
The two departures we run
The 3-night trip is ₹16,500 per person, the 5-night is ₹24,500, both starting and ending in Guwahati. Stay, travel, the sightseeing in the itinerary and a trip captain are in the price.

The clear-water photographs of the Umngot at Dawki that made Meghalaya famous are taken in the dry months. In monsoon the same river runs brown.
What to actually pack
- Shoes with grip you trust on wet stone. This is not negotiable for Nongriat.
- A rain layer, in every month. Cherrapunji does not consult the forecast.
- Cash. Card acceptance thins out fast outside Shillong.
- A dry bag or a plastic bag for your phone on the Dawki boat.
